February 24, the ninth grade Science Olympiad team went to the regional competition at Missouri State University. The team is made up of many of the same people as the eighth grade team from last year. However, they had to compete against other high school teams instead of junior high teams.

“I was very happy with the results,” says the team sponsor, Carrie Woods. “Considering the teams that we were competing against were made up of mainly upperclassmen, we did much better than I thought we were going to.”

“Obviously I wanted to do a little better than we did,” says team member, Garrett Coggin. “But, I think that overall we did pretty good.“ Coggin received 12th in Chemistry Lab, 8th in Materials Science, 4th in Towers, and 4th in Thermodynamics.

As a whole, the team got 10th out of 17 teams. The team placed in six events. They received 2nd place in Optics, 3rd place in Astronomy, 3rd in Hovercraft, 3rd in Thermodynamics, 4th in Towers, and 5th place in Rocks and Minerals.

Although the team didn’t qualify for state, they are planning on having a very similar team next year and they will try to learn from their mistakes.
