The 62nd NHL all-star game was held January 31 with four different teams playing a round robin tournament with the Metropolitan team coming out the winner.

The games were held at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, where the Los Angeles Kings play regular season games. Along with the main games of the tournament there was also a celebrity game that included events such as Justin Beiber getting body checked into the glass. There was also a skills challenge including fastest skater, won by Connor McDavid, and a shooting competition, won by Patrick Kane, of the Chicago Blackhawks.

The metropolitan division, led by fill-in coach Wayne Gretzky, beat the atlantic division 10-6. The pacific division ended the tournament with a 4-3 win. The Philadelphia Flyers winger, Wayne Simmonds, scored three goals in the final game and was named the MVP.

This was the second year for the four-team, three-on-three format and the first time an African-American was named as the MVP. During this year’s event,  a one million dollar award was given to the winner which was also a first for the NHL all star game.
